Matt's online Journal entry: 8/23/03

[Go Back to Specials]
August 23rd, 2003 It’s interesting, whenever somebody asks me “what are you up to?” I always want to answer, “nothing much.” Why is that? Is it because I literally can’t think of anything that’s happening? Is it because I like to appear modest? Is it just a common conversation starter, like answering “fine” to the question “how are you doing?” A casting director I met in L.A. said these kinds of small talk quirks were her pet peeves. She followed up by saying “Keep it real… mean what you say” a woman beside me practically jumped up and gave a “Hallelujah!” (Not that I wasn’t just as overly-enthusiastic) I think, though, that when I answer, “nothing much” I’m only saying it to avoid going into the many large (and great) things that are happening in my life. I’ll often follow the “nothing much” bit with at least one thing in my life that’s happening. For example, “Oh yes, I’m moving pretty soon into a new house,” or “I spent this last month in L.A.” or “I’m currently editing my movie” – rarely would the conversation delve into all three topics. I also try to stay as far away from Film and Filmmaking in my conversations as possible. It’s not that I don’t want to talk their heads off about the latest Quentin movie, or styles of Filmmaking. It’s because the conversation would be extremely one-sided. I understand that Filmmaking is a unique subject and hobby that I can only share in conversation with a select few, so I don’t start them. Let’s take, for example, a completely hypothetical case. Say a regular human and a slimy slug-like Alien meet. Some particular conversation starters the human should not delve into is “boy, my fingers keep cracking, I don’t understand why!” Let’s say the Alien’s purpose on earth is to go rock sight-seeing - a conversation the Alien should not attempt would be “Have you ever watched a small rock roll down a steep incline? I saw this one two miles from here…” I suppose I can relate to these kinds of situations because in High School, my two friends Allen Mulliken and Aaron Read and my college bud, Daniel Bryant, all love cars. It’s not that I too… umm - ok, so I really could care less about cars. Anyway, you get the point. Back to the “nothing much” deal. I guess that whenever I write these online journals, I’d like to say “Nothing Much,” when in fact, there’s PLENTY going on. To sum it up, here’s the gist of it: 1. Antoine and I started a filmmaking club last year, it’s doing really well! 2. I think I’m finally done producing HERO – turned out GREAT! 3. Now I get to start editing my own movie, “Mikey” which I’ve filmed already, but now need to edit – booo, I hate editing. 4. We’re moving out of this apartment sometime in about a week into a house that is right beside UCD – whooohooo! 5. I’m starting to develop the story for my next short film which will be about the love between a man and a robot. 6. School starts in a month – booo/yay. 7. I’m starting to work out again at the rec hall! 8. Band-uh will start up again soon! 9. I should be going back to Burlingame/Foster City soon to meet up again with my old pals from HS. Hope this update satiates your hunger for what’s going on in my life – hope I havn’t fed you too many beans! Have a good one, -Matt
